Most houses in Nangi are built from stone and slate with mud-washed interiors, materials that are readily available in the area.

In the past all of the houses used to be circular in shape and had thatched roofs with walls made of mud, stone, bamboo and logs.

However, most of the houses being built today are rectangular and two-storied.[houses.jpg]

The walls are made of stone and the roof of slates, which are mined from nearby quarries. All our building materials are local products except the nails. We do not put glass in the windows. Our windows are made of wood.

The upper floor of a house is mostly used for storing grains and other things. On the ground floor, we have an open fire place in the middle to cook food and heat the house.

We sleep around the fire place at night. Just above the fire, we hang a flat tray like big basket made of bamboo for drying grains. Every house has a grindstone to grind corn, millet and barley grains. Some houses have running water and electricity but many do not. Kerosene lamps are often used to light the houses.
